Two Years of Devastation: Gaza Faces an Unprecedented Humanitarian Catastrophe
Publish Date 04-11-2025

Two years after the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip, the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen amid ongoing blockade and the destruction of essential life systems. In its weekly report titled “Damage of the Assault and Humanitarian Priorities,” the Ministry of Health in Gaza reveals the immense scale of destruction and suffering experienced by more than two million people—one of the worst humanitarian disasters in modern history.

Catastrophic Human Losses

The report states that over 67,800 people have been killed and more than 170,000 civilians injured, including thousands of women and children. Additional alarming figures include:

• 56,348 widowed women

• 21,193 orphaned children

• 460 deaths from hunger and malnutrition, including 154 children

• 12,000 miscarriages due to lack of medical and nutritional care

Collapse of Food Security

The report warns of an imminent famine threatening hundreds of thousands of children, with 650,000 at risk of starvation. Israel continues to block over 250,000 infant milk containers monthly, worsening health and nutrition crises. The report also documents 540 aid workers killed while performing their humanitarian duties.

Destruction of Agriculture and Livestock

Agriculture in Gaza is nearly wiped out: 94% of farmland destroyed, over 665 farms damaged, and 1,223 agricultural wells ruined. Annual vegetable production plummeted from 405,000 tons to just 28,000 tons, while the fishing sector has been entirely halted.

Health Sector on the Brink of Collapse

More than 19,000 injured require long-term treatment, including:

• 4,800 amputees

• 1,200 paralysis cases

• 1,200 cases of vision loss

Around 350,000 chronic patients face life-threatening conditions due to medicine shortages, including 17,000 cancer patients without treatment. The report also documents 788 attacks on medical facilities, the destruction of 38 hospitals, 96 health centers, and 197 ambulances.

Displacement and Shelter Crisis

Over two million civilians have been displaced, with 268,000 homes fully destroyed, 148,000 rendered uninhabitable, and 153,000 partially damaged. A total of 293 shelters have been directly targeted, leaving hundreds of thousands without safe refuge.

Collapse of the Education System

The assault destroyed 165 educational institutions completely and 392 partially, leaving 90% of schools requiring reconstruction. The sector has lost 13,500 students, 830 teachers, and 193 academics.

Water and Sanitation Breakdown

The report documents the destruction of 725 central water wells, 134 freshwater projects, and over 700,000 meters of water and sewage pipelines, leaving hundreds of thousands without clean water or basic sanitation.

Urgent Humanitarian Priorities

To alleviate the crisis, the Ministry of Health identifies urgent needs in the following areas:

Food & Water:

• Food parcels, flour, hot meals

• Safe drinking water

Shelter:

• Tents, blankets, kitchen supplies

• Cooking fuel

Health:

• Medicines and medical supplies

• Fuel for hospitals

• Infant formula and diapers

• Psychological and social support

Education:

• Stationery and teacher support

• Educational sponsorships for displaced children

Water & Sanitation:

• Fuel for pumping stations

• Clean water distribution projects

Conclusion

The report warns that Gaza is enduring one of the gravest humanitarian catastrophes in modern times. It urges the international community to act urgently to save lives, open crossings for medical and food supplies, and support humanitarian organizations working tirelessly on the ground.
